Venkatraman Thyagarajan (Thyagi)

    Venkatraman Thyagarajan (Thyagi), a 38-year veteran of GlaxoSmithKline, began as a Management Trainee in 1970, with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, and an MBA from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. After nine years in sales and marketing, he went global as Marketing Consultant for Glaxo Spain. He was then appointed Marketing Consultant for operations in Europe and then Marketing Director for the Middle East, Africa, and Eastern Europe. On his return to Mumbai, he was appointed Managing Director of Glaxo India, and later became Area Director of GlaxoWellcome Asia Pacific.

    In 2000, Mr. Thyagarajan was handpicked to lead the newly merged GlaxoSmithKline in South Asia. As Vice President for India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, and Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of GSK India, he managed the successful merger and architected the company’s radical transformation.

    Mr. Thyagarajan’s career with GSK culminated with his role as Regional Director and Senior Vice President of GSK Asia Pacific, with responsibility for Korea, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and South Asia. He was also a member of the International Management Team of GSK and chaired Pharmaceutical Research Manufacturers of America for Asia.

    After retiring in 2008, Mr. Thyagarajan has served on the boards of several companies, and is currently Independent Non-Executive Director on the Boards of Tata Consultancy Services Ltd; Varian Medical Systems Inc, U.S.A.; the Corporate Board of the Murugappa Group of Companies; and he has also served on the boards of Sanmar Group, and International Enterprise Singapore. He continues to serve as the Vice-Chairman and Non-Executive Director on the Board of GSK in India.
